THE '3-D' TAN FROM ST.TROPEZ

Inspired by 1990s Versace campaigns and showcased on catwalk muses at Louise Goldin S/S 2010, the tan is back with a vengeance - but this time it’s detailed, it’s tailored and it’s a modern take on the traditional tan…

The common theme running throughout the spring summer collections was attention to detail with the clothes, the make-up and the hair styled to perfection. The canvas for all these things, the body, was no exception and this season it was viewed and treated as an extension of the face, with equal amounts of effort being put into a variety of finished effects. Skin was healthy, glowing and strong, with references ranging from ‘Nordic surfer ice queens’ to 'solarised' and otherworldly skin as seen at Marios Schwab.

Whatever the reference though, skin needed more than just a one-dimensional, flat application of self-tan, resulting in the birth of a new trend – a ‘3D tan’ with depth, dimension and definition. Think of it as the tailored fashion tan for spring/summer 2010.

“Definition and depth through tanning products enhances skin tones in an alluring way by lengthening limbs and contouring the back, shoulders and stomach. And now creating richly tanned skin has never been easier thanks to a combination of products like Everyday Body or Wash Off Mousse, which help to lift the skin. A final layering of St Tropez’s NEW Skin Illuminator Cream for added dimension through the use of highlighting key areas, is the latest beauty trend to hit the catwalk.”

  • Prior to application of any self-tanning product it is important to prepare the skin to ensure an even and smooth application.
  • Use Body Polish prior to the self-tan application and then every 2-3 days. This will gently buff the skin and remove any dead skin cells which will help your tan fade more evenly and also bring your skin back to life with a healthy glow.
  • Apply Bronzing Lotion to the entire body for the deepest tan. To simulate a naturally developed tan effect, blend Body Moistursier with the Bronzing Lotion when applying tan to the face, hands, feet and inner arm to dilute the colour. Allow the product to develop between 4-12 hours. Use latex gloves to prevent tan staining the hands. Alternatively, use an applicator mitt apply Self Tan Mousse to the entire body taking care to blend gently over the knees, feet, elbows and hands for a more natural finish.
  • For a quick and flawless finish to the face, start by applying the Bronzing Rocks to the cheeks and temples, dusting it gently across the collar bone. To add depth to the eyes apply Bronzing Rocks into the eye socket using an eye shadow brush or pick up an individual rock and draw into the area.
  • Apply Radiance Mousse to the apple of the cheeks, brow area and lips. Use a small amount in the palm of your hands and gently sweep the mousse down your arms and also onto the chins for a subtle sheen
  • Bronzing Powder can be applied with a powder brush to the cheek bone area and under the chin to add depth and definition with a subtle shimmer.
  • To contour the body the Wash Off range can be utilized on top of your self-tan product once developed. To enhance the cleavage apply a small amount of Wash Off Body/Mousse to the cleavage to create a ‘shadow’ effect. This creates the illusion of a fuller breast.
